What do you own?

Pick everything that applies. We ask for the amounts in the next step.

What doesn't count?

Your home, your car, household goods and things for personal use do not count. Pension savings only count if you can access them today – then enter them under cash or investments.

Harvest zakat (ushr)

Agricultural produce has its own zakat: due on every harvest, with no waiting year, and separate from the rest of your wealth.

Seed, fertiliser, labour. They are deducted first. Not irrigation: the 5 % rate already accounts for it.

Irrigation

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: whoever has enough gives a fixed share of their wealth each year to people in need. It is due from every adult who has held wealth above the nisab for a full year.

How this calculator works: it adds up your zakatable wealth – cash and bank balances, gold, silver, shares and funds, crypto, money owed to you and trade goods – subtracts debts due within the next twelve months and compares the result with the nisab. If it is above, 2.577% is due if you count by the solar year, or 2.5% by the lunar year.

We value gold and silver at today's market prices, converted into your currency. You always see when the prices are from, and you can enter your own price at any time, for example your jeweller's buying price.

Who may receive zakat is set out in the Quran, Surah at-Tawbah, verse 60. If in doubt, ask a mosque or an organisation you trust how it uses zakat.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay zakat?

Every adult Muslim of sound mind whose zakatable wealth, after deducting debts that are due, has reached or exceeded the nisab for a full year.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the threshold from which zakat is due. Diyanet sets it at 80.18 g of gold, or alternatively 561.2 g of silver. Because prices change every day, so does the nisab in your currency – which is why we use today's prices.

Gold or silver as the benchmark?

Diyanet and the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation use gold, which is our default. The silver nisab is much lower; some scholars recommend it because more people then pay zakat and more people in need benefit. You can switch in the calculator.

Why 2.577% instead of 2.5%?

2.5% applies to a lunar year of about 354 days. If you calculate your zakat by the solar year, your year is about eleven days longer, so you pay 2.577%. You can choose either in the calculator.

Does jewellery count?

In the Hanafi school, which Diyanet follows, jewellery that is worn counts too. Most other schools exempt worn jewellery. The calculator counts it; if you follow another school, leave it out of the calculator.

How do I treat debts and loans?

Deduct what falls due within the next twelve months. For a mortgage that means only the instalments of those twelve months, not the whole outstanding balance.

When is zakat due?

Once your wealth has stayed above the nisab for a full year. Many people fix a personal date for this, for example in Ramadan, and work out their wealth on that day every year.

What is ushr (harvest zakat)?

Agricultural produce has its own zakat: 10% with natural irrigation, 5% with paid irrigation, due on every harvest from about 653 kg. Production costs are deducted first.
